TOP TIPS TO NAIL YOUR ONLINE JOB INTERVIEW

Millions of users around the world use online platforms every day for communication, as well as many companies are now conducting their job interviews through this platform.

As a new year begins, there are dozens of new resolutions people compromise to achieve, such as learning a new language, but the truth is only a few stick to them. Lack of motivation or time is the main reason behind it.

In a society as globalized as ours, where more and more people are willing to move to another city or country for work, video interviews are an increasing trend. They are more convenient and economical, especially during the first round of interviews.

In the Fashion and Luxury sector, brands move in very competitive international markets, and they often look for talent from any part of the world. “Online job interviews are an increasingly common trend, especially in Retail, where international profiles are required,” says Julio Collado, General Director at Luxe Talent.

Skype is the most common tool to connect interviewer and interviewee, but it is not the only one. Google+ Hangouts is also very popular among companies to recruit talent.

The success of your selection process will depend on your performance during your online job interview. Even though you may be familiar with social media and digital platforms in general, there’s a lot you can do to make sure your performance is a complete success! For this reason, in Luxe Talent, as Recruitment experts, we have collected the following tips to help you make the right impression in your next Skype interview:

1. USE YOUR NAME AND SURNAME AS USERNAME

Make sure you have a professional Skype username. It is always better to use your first name and your last name.

Don’t forget to check your contact requests and accept the interviewer or, failing that, send an invitation yourself.

2. CHECK YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION

The last thing you want when doing a Skype interview is a crappy connection.

Check your internet connection and make sure there won’t be any interruption during your video call. Check the microphone, the speaker and the camera, too.

3. MAKE A TEST

Always make a test before you start your call, especially if you’re not familiar with the platform. Explore the different options the tool offers.

4. THINK ABOUT YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Choose a silent space where nobody can bother you to make the interview. Adjust the webcam and be aware of the background that the interviewer will see through the screen. Set up a clean, neutral background with good lighting. Remember that what’s behind you matters.

5. MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT

Always look at the webcam, not the screen. It will make you seem more present and interested in what the interviewer is telling you. If you have notes, be discreet when you read them and try to be as spontaneous as possible in your conversation with the other person.

6. DRESS TO IMPRESS

Dress in the same way you would do for a face-to-face interview. The goal is the same: the interviewer will analyse your image and communication skills in the same way as if you were in a face-to-face interview.

7. DAZZLE THEM!

It’s your chance to prove your worth and show them you’re the person they’re looking for. Don’t forget to thank the interviewer for his time, and don’t finish the call without knowing the next steps of the recruitment process.

The best advice the team from Luxe Talent can give you is to prepare the Skype interview as if it were a face-to-face interview.

Don’t let the comfort of your home ruin your interview!
